Nancy at home?â Rebus asked Sievewrightâs flatmate when the young man answered the door.
âNo.â
No, because sheâd been walking up Leith Street when Rebus had passed her in his Saab. Meaning he had maybe a twenty-minute start on her, always supposing sheâd head straight for her flat.
âItâs Eddie, right?â Rebus said. âI was here a few days ago.â
âI remember.â
âDidnât catch your surname, though.â
âGentry.â
âAs in Bobbie Gentry.â
âNot many people know her these days.â
âIâm older than most peopleâgot a couple of her albums at home. Mind if I come in?â Rebus noted that Gentry had lost his bandanna but still wore the smudgy eyeliner. âShe told me to be here at three,â he lied blithely.
âSomeone was at the door for her a while back . . .â Gentry was reluctant, but Rebusâs stare told him resistance was futile. He opened the door a little wider, and Rebus gave a little bow of the head as he walked in. The living room smelled of stale tobacco and something that could have been patchouli oilâbeen awhile since Rebus had come across that particular scent. He wandered over to the window and peered down onto Blair Street.
âTell you a funny story,â he said, back still to Eddie Gentry. âThereâs a warren of basements across the way where bands used to practice. Owner was thinking of redeveloping, so he got some builders in. They were working in these tunnelsâmiles and miles of themâand they started to hear unearthly groans . . .â
âThe massage parlor next door,â Gentry said, cutting to the punch line.
âYouâve heard it.â Rebus turned from the window and studied some of the album sleevesâactual LPs rather than CDs. âCaravan,â he commented. âCanterburyâs finest . . . didnât know people still listened to them.â There were other sleeves he recognized: the Fairports and Davey Graham and Pentangle.
âSomebody studying archaeology?â he guessed.
âI like a lot of the old stuff,â Gentry explained. He nodded towards the corner of the room. âI play guitar.â
âSo you do,â Rebus agreed, seeing a six-string acoustic nestling on its stand, a twelve-string lying on the floor behind it. âAny good?â
In answer, Gentry picked up the six-string and settled on the sofa, legs crossed beneath him. He started to play, and Rebus realized that heâd grown the fingernails long on his right hand, each one a readymade plectrum. Rebus knew the tune, even if he couldnât place it.
âBert Jansch?â he guessed over the closing chord.
âFrom that album he did with John Renbourn.â
âHavenât listened to it in years.â Rebus nodded his appreciation. âYouâre pretty good, son. Shame you canât make a living from it, eh? Might have stopped you from dealing drugs.â
âWhat?â
âNancyâs told us all about it.â
âWhoa, wait a minute.â Gentry put his guitar aside and rose to his feet. âWhatâs that youâre saying?â
âA deaf musician?â Rebus sounded impressed.
âI heard the words, I just donât know why she would say that.â
âNight the poet was killed, she was picking up a delivery from the guy you introduced her to.â
âShe didnât say that.â Gentry was trying to sound confident, but his eyes told Rebus a different story.
